Yes, people carry pretty much the same things you see in most metro areas.
You'll see a lot of day packs and back packs in Cape Town as it is a
backpackers haven. A purse should be fine in Jo-burg, just keep it close
to your side or in front of you. The less flashy, the better. However, I
doubt you will find yourself in shady areas, except around the stadium.

Karen, you can probably best answer this one...
Do women generally carry purses, or are daypacks common? Like I said,
weird
question. But considering that it will probably be quite warm, I probably
won't be wearing a jacket to keep things(like my camera and extra film,
bottle
of water, maps, etc) in. I'm just wondering what would be least
conspicuous
or least likely to get snatched. Though I don't plan on wandering around
alone.
11 years in NYC...and still I find myself a tad apprehensive about Joburg.
