Just got this from the local press in Jo'Burg:

U2 Were In South Africa for 18 hours - The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam
Clayton of U2 flew
into Johannesburg International Airport at 2am Sunday
15/02/98. Bono was the only member of U2
not in South Africa he flew to Australia from Germany. The
unexpected visit was due to a problem
with the U2s flight to Australia. The South African promoters
of the PopMart tour were given 5 hours
notice of the bands arrival, which as I am sure you can
imagine caused a bit of panic. They booked
into the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg; (there were no
porters around at that time, so they
had to carry their own baggage). The entourage of about 19
(bodyguards included) paid a visit to
Krypton a trendy Johannesburg nightclub, then went to another
trendy Johannesburg area Meville for
breakfast. After Breakfast, they went back to their hotel for
some well-deserved rest. U2 flew out of
Johannesburg International Airport at 8pm Sunday 15/02/98

No reason to post this, other than to confirm that the Hyatt will be a
good likely place to sight the boys. ;-)
