I have to agree with Sean Kriegler. The reports of crime in SA have
created a lot of paranoia. When I first arrived I was bombarded with
warnings and directives on safety. I nearly expected to walk into a war
zone. But I didn't. It all has to do with educating yourself on where NOT
to go ( this won't be hard - any local will gladly offer this info to you),
and on common sense. Basically:

* don't go into downtown Jo-burg at night, be careful during the day too
* try not to walk by yourself, especially at night
* drive with your doors locked and windows up or mostly up
* be aware of who/what is around when you are stopped at a light, or while
walking
* don't leave anything of real or perceived value visible in your car, even
while driving - put everything in the trunk
* keep your wallets, valuables, etc. close to you - keep a hand on your
purse, etc.
* don't make yourself an easy victim

I have heard similar warnings about Cape Town too. I think a lot of
'tourist' crime stems from tourists thinking that is a very safe city and
letting their guard down. It's a beautiful place, enjoy it, but be smart.
